Researchers looked at the effect of Nexium 24HR and found no heart issues. The findings were in line with a recent study which found no heart issues in patients treated with Nexium 24HR (esomeprazole magnesium).
“When you take up to one hour before or two hours after taking Nexium 24HR and it's working, it gives you heart attacks,” says, a gastroenterologist and medical director of the Department of Gastroenterology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.
Nexium 24HR, the drug developed by Eli Lilly and Company, works by blocking the effects of certain enzymes on the body. These enzymes are called proton pumps. They are located in the stomach and are responsible for producing acid. Acid is a naturally occurring substance that is found in the foods that people eat. Nexium 24HR (esomeprazole magnesium) can help to lower the amount of acid produced by these proton pumps and is a widely used drug for treating the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcers.
“We use these drugs together in the treatment of heartburn and other symptoms of acid reflux,” says Dr. George J. Wolin, a gastroenterologist and senior author of the study. “When you take up to one hour before or two hours after taking Nexium 24HR and it's working, it gives you heart attacks,” says Dr. John P. Siegel, a medical director of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
There are no reports of heart issues, but there are some serious side effects from Nexium 24HR:
“There is not enough evidence that the effects of Nexium 24HR are related to its effect on the heart. It is likely to be related to the amount of acid in the blood,” Dr. Wolin continues. “If you take a dose of 40 mg of Nexium 24HR, your heart will be able to make more acid.”
“There is a need to understand the role of proton pumps in the heart to make a full-time job possible,” says Dr. P. D. Thomas, a gastroenterologist and medical director of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
“Heart problems can occur in people with the use of the proton pump inhibitors,” he says. “They can affect how they work or cause more severe conditions that need medical attention.”
“When you have heart problems, you are more likely to get heartburn and you are more likely to have a heart attack. This is very important because the heart itself is not a good thing,” says Dr. Thomas. “People who have heart problems will have a higher risk for a heart attack, stroke, heart failure, or other serious problems. They are also more likely to develop these conditions.”
Dr. Thomas says the use of Nexium 24HR can have a positive effect on the heart, but it should not be taken by people who have a history of heart disease.
“The heart is a very good place to work and you should be able to work on your heart for the rest of your life,” he says. “It is important that your heart is healthy and that your doctor can diagnose heart problems and recommend treatment. You should always keep a cardiologist available to discuss the problem and prescribe the medication.”
